The Harrow
Philip Mazza’s worlds are sprawling tapestries woven with history, mythology, and enchanting landscapes. The Harrow, the primary setting for his most noteworthy saga, is a fantastical land steeped in an age-old past. Lush, rolling hills of the North Sage Barrow, home to bobbins, a peaceful race known for their love of food and simple pleasures, contrast with the majestic, snow-capped peaks of the Thornback Mountains that pierce the clouds. Towering forests, remnants of a primeval age, teem with ancient and sometimes dangerous creatures. Elves, a graceful and immortal race with pointed ears and otherworldly beauty, dwell in elegant, ethereal cities carved into the sides of towering mountains. Dwarves, known for their craftsmanship and fiery beards, inhabit vast underground cities carved into the living rock of The Old Hills. And the race of Man, diverse and scattered across the Harrow, range from the noble and valiant to those corrupted of the North, enslaved by the dark forces.
Beyond the Harrow exists a broader, mythical cosmology. Mazza crafted a creation story detailing the origins of the universe, of the grand creator himself, the Maker. This rich mythology adds depth and grandeur to the Harrow, hinting at a vast and ancient history that predates even the oldest elven memories. The presence of magic, wielded by powerful beings like wizards and elves, imbues the world with a sense of wonder and danger. Even seemingly mundane objects can hold hidden enchantments, waiting to be discovered by those brave or foolish enough to seek them. But Mazza’s fantasy world is not an idyllic utopia. There are evil forces, embodied by a dark presence which coexists with the Maker, that threaten those of the good and righteous with monstrous minions, constantly destroying the peace of the Harrow. However, the stories also celebrate themes of courage, fellowship, and the indomitable spirit of good overcoming darkness. The vastness and detail of Mazza’s worlds invite readers to lose themselves in a rich tapestry of history, myth, and adventure.
