When a mysterious virus wipes out every adult on Earth, the surviving children are left to inherit a rotting, silent metropolis. There are no parents coming home, no police, and no rules—only a vast, unruled territory carved up by ruthless youth factions. In the center of the chaos is fifteen-year-old Jameis, an observant survivor clinging to a small group of allies: Mara, a pragmatist who trusts no one; Deke, a former cop’s son bent on rebuilding law with a gun; Nia, a sharp navigator; and Tully, a quiet boy collecting personal effects from the dead in hopes the adults might still return.

To survive, the children must navigate a brutal new landscape where canned peaches are worth more than gold, pets become food, and the scent of decay turns into part of the city’s architecture. Territory is fiercely contested by bizarre, violent gangs. The Clowns, led by a boy in a plastic crown, paint their faces and treat the apocalypse as a cruel joke; The House runs a totalitarian rationing regime out of a luxury hotel; and deep in the dark subway tunnels, starving children begin crossing lines into unthinkable cannibalism.

Through it all, Jameis views the crumbling city through a haunting psychological lens—a distorted memory of a circus his parents took him to as a child. To Jameis, the gang leaders are ringmasters, the violence is just a rehearsed act, and the unburied corpses of the adults are an audience sitting quietly in the grandstands, forever watching. But as starvation peaks, full-scale gang war erupts, and Jameis uncovers conflicting evidence about his own past, his grip on reality begins to fracture. Was his memory of the circus real, or is the mind simply painting a grand illusion to survive the nightmare?
